With winter on its way, here are a few tips from your Douglas Downs HOA for how to get your home and property ready for the season. Although our winters aren’t the harshest around, there are still some important precautions you can take to protect your home from freezing temperatures.

First, we recommend checking your home for any drafts around windows, doors, and the foundation so you can reinforce the seal to help keep the heat inside during the colder months. It’s also a good idea to check up on your carbon dioxide and other monitoring systems to make sure everything is functioning properly for one of the most energy-dense seasons. If you have a fireplace, check out your chimney and think about getting it professionally cleaned for healthier airflow when building fires this winter.

Around your yard, remember to drain outdoor faucets and hoses to prevent pipes from freezing and hoses from springing leaks. Consider covering or bringing inside outdoor furniture to protect it from harsh winter weather conditions. It can also be a good idea to mulch designated beds and the roots of trees/ shrubs around the first freeze of the year to protect your plants from the cold and prepare the beds for healthy spring blooms.

For inside your home, we recommend sprucing up and reorganizing your entryway and storage areas to increase accessibility to all your winter essentials– warm layers, firewood, rock salt, and whatever else you need to be prepared for the season.

The winter is also a season full of exciting holidays and family celebrations, and we know decorations are often part of the festivities! Our community is full of diverse traditions, and we encourage everyone to celebrate the season while respecting your fellow neighbors. Please keep in mind that decorations with extra light and sound should be on timers or turned off at appropriate nighttime hours. Happy Holidays and stay warm!
